Tragedy at Escalante Turn-About Ranch teen facility
A 61 year-old youth rehabilitation facility staff member was killed by one of his 17 year old male charges. The teen was later apprehended by the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office.
The assault occurred on Tuesday, December 6, at the Turn-About Ranch near Escalante, Utah. The staff member was assaulted about 7:30 a.m., according to a press release from the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office. Another juvenile who witnessed the attack ran for help, and a female staff member responded and confronted the suspect, preventing the attacker from entering the building where others were.
The female staffer was assaulted and injured during the confrontation. She was taken to a local hospital, where she was treated for injuries considered not to be life-threatening.
After allegedly attacking the woman, the suspect got access to a staff member’s vehicle and fled the scene, driving toward Escalante. The vehicle passed two deputies who were en route to the scene, and a chase ensued. The deputies employed a pit maneuver, which resulted in the suspect crashing the vehicle. The young assailant was taken into custody.
