Chiropractor Dr. Mike Massengale has traveled to many locations in his life, but has decided to call Kanab his home!

Growing up in Georgia and Tennessee, his dad retired from the military and his family moved to Utah when he was 14. He lived in Sandy and St. George when he was young.

Massengale also went into the military, and served as a Navy corpsman medic stationed in Japan. That clarified his life focus on the treatment of injuries and pain.

After serving, he went to the Western States Chiropractic School in Portland, Oregon. “I wanted to focus on the body’s natural ability to heal itself. It’s how I wanted to go,” explained Massengale.

Having lived in Kanab in 1995 after graduation in chiropractic medicine, Massengale came back to Kanab ... albeit briefly, in 2003. “I just loved the area! But at that time, there were several chiropractors here, and I moved on to jobs elsewhere.” Great jobs in Bullhead City, Arizona, and Taylorsville, Utah, allowed Massengale to advance his expertise in chiropractic. While in Taylorsville, he was the chiropractor for the Utah Grizzlies hockey team for seven years.

But even doctors experience health challenges, and Massengale was having some back issues! His wife, Nicole Shugart, was from here, and she and their three children were living here while he sought other career options.

“They were in Kanab while I was gone,” said Massengale. “I missed them too much, and decided to open up a practice here. It’s a good place to raise children.”

Massengale’s own back problems resulted in him more fully appreciating pain remedies, as well as the body’s natural way to heal. “I’ve always enjoyed a great relationship with medical doctors, and certainly appreciate what they do. They do me as well, knowing I get patients in and out, if there is something I can do to help their body in a natural way.”

With an introductory special of $29 for the first visit and $39 for the second, Massengale wants people with pain issues to come in and give chiropractic a try! He is located at 1739 South Highway 89A, just south of Kanab. His phone number is 644-5522. “I try to make it affordable!” He also has a plan that allows a patient to get two visits for $49 per month. Appointments can be scheduled online at

“I love Kanab,” concluded Massengale. “I love the friendliness I’ve always felt here!”
