The Kanab Cowboy basketball team was busy last week. They lost to 3A Canyon View’s JV team, on December 16, by one point, 45-44. Then on Friday and Saturday, they competed in the Danny Hill Invitational Tournament at Gunnison. The Cowboys fell to Grand 46-42 on Friday, then nipped host Gunnison on Saturday 57-56.

The game with Canyon View was close the whole way. Canyon View led 9-8 after one quarter of action. They stretched their lead to 25-21 at the halftime break. A strong third period by Kanab ended with a 34-34 tie. It came right down to the wire, but Canyon View scored one more than the Cowboys in the final frame to win 45-44.

Kanab was led by Layne Anderson with 12 points, four rebounds and one assist. Monte Glover netted eight points, pulled down six boards and had four assists. Dane Stewart chipped in with three three-pointers on his way to nine points. Dakota McDonald and Tavin Ott added five points apiece.

Grand edged Kanab 46-42 in the first game at Gunnison on Friday. This was another barn-burner, with the Cowboys leading by two heading into the fourth quarter. Kanab led 10-8 in the first frame. They stretched their lead to five at the break, 23-18. A sluggish third period, where Kanab could only muster seven points, saw their lead shrink to two points, 30-28. A big fourth quarter by the Red Devils, when they matched their first half total of 18 points, was too much for the Cowboys, and they fell by four, 46-42.

In the final game of the weekend, Kanab finally won a close game, edging host Gunnison 57-56 in another contest that was even throughout. Gunnison led by one point, 15-14, after the first quarter. Kanab squeaked ahead by one at the break, leading 28-27. Kanab’s best quarter, the third, saw them put up 16 points, as they led by four, 44-40, heading into the final stanza. Gunnison put in 16 of their own in the fourth period, but came up one point short, as Kanab prevailed 57-56 in another heart-beater.

Monte Glover led the Cowboys with 18 points, while Layne Anderson hit three treys on his way to 16 points. Dane Stewart made some big shots and contributed 11.
