Kane County Hospital is partnering with the American Red Cross by sponsoring a Blood Drive on Thursday, July 23.

The following is information regarding donor incentives, which is found in their flyer:

A few words about donor incentives: “The American Red Cross relies solely on volunteer blood donors to meet the needs of thousands of patients each day. We depend on the integrity of each of those donors to provide us with a complete, accurate and honest health history prior to donating. It is vitally important that each donor understands that he or she is donating blood voluntarily and no compensation, in any form, will be provided. Any compensation could encourage the falsification of important health history information, thus compromising the safety of the blood supply.”

Some good information from their First Time Donors flyer includes: “Get a good night’s sleep and have a good breakfast or lunch. Drink plenty of water to replace the volume you will be donating, (avoid tea, coffee, or other beverages with caffeine). Eat iron rich foods, and try to avoid fatty foods before you donate.”

You will want to wear clothing with sleeves that can be raised above the elbow. If you know you have good veins, show them to the staff, and relax.

After you have given your donation, take a moment. Enjoy the snack and a drink that will be provided by the American Red Cross.

If you feel light-headed, lie down, preferably with your feet elevated, until the feeling passes. Hydrate with plenty of fluids over the next 24-48 hours. Avoid strenuous physical activity or heavy lifting for about five hours.

In rare cases when bleeding occurs after removing the bandage, apply pressure to the site and raise your arm for three to five minutes. If bleeding or bruising occurs under the skin, apply a cold pack to the area periodically during the first 24 hours.

Please help us by volunteering to give. Your donation will make a difference. Watch for The Importance of Iron in Blood Donation in next week’s SUN.

We will be holding the drive in the Kanab City Library’s multi-purpose room.

Blood Drive appointments begin at 1:30 p.m. on July 23, with the final appointment at 6:15 p.m. To schedule an appointment, please call Laurali at 435-644-4161 or e-mail at LNoteman@kchosp.net.
