Scoping for Powell Ranger District - revisions to road and trail management
The Powell Ranger District of the Dixie National Forest is proposing to relocate, reclassify, or decommission a number of existing roads and trails, as well as construct or designate new roads and trails. The purpose of this project is to revise the Motorized Travel Plan for the district and is limited to addressing known deficiencies in the 2009 Dixie National Forest Motorized Travel Plan.
According to the Scoping Notice issued by the district and Dixie National Forest, “the revision is to provide a road and trail system for the district, designated for motorized use that is considered safe and responsive to public needs and desires, conforms to the Forest Plan, and is environmentally sound.”
Public meetings will be held at four locations to discuss the proposed project.
The Notice of Intent for this project was published in the Federal Register on January 8. Public meetings will be held at four locations to discuss the proposed project. Dates and locations include:
January 28, 6 p.m. – Panguitch City Office, 25 South 200 East, Panguitch
January 29, 6 p.m. – Piute County Courthouse, 550 North Main Street, Junction
February 2, 6 p.m. – Heritage Center/Tropic Town Office, 20 North Main Street, Tropic
February 4, 6 p.m. – Kane County Courthouse, 76 North Main Street, Kanab
Copies of the proposed action and project area maps can be obtained from the Powell Ranger District office or by accessing the Dixie National Forest Web page for the “Powell Travel Management Project.” See maps relevant to the proposed action here.
Comments may be written, hand-delivered, oral, and electronically submitted until February 20. Hand-delivered comments can be submitted to the district office from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding federal holidays. Comments may also be submitted via e-mail (attachments can be in .docx, .doc, .txt, .pdf, and .rtf formats only) with the subject line as “Powell Travel Management Project”.

Comments submitted anonymously will be accepted and considered.
Comments received in response to this solicitation, including names and addresses of those who comment, will be part of the public record for this project proposal. Individuals and organizations who submit timely and specific written comments regarding the proposed project will be eligible to file an objection under 36 CFR 218. Comments submitted anonymously will be accepted and considered; however, anonymous comments will not provide the agency with the ability to provide the respondent with subsequent environmental documents nor will the respondent be eligible to provide an objection pursuant to 36 CFR 218.
