The Kanab Cowgirls Claimed fourth place last weekend at the 2A State Basketball Tournament at SUU in Cedar City.

Kanab knocked off Region 16 #1 seed Gunnison in their first game on Thursday when Whitney Houston hit a long three-pointer with eight seconds left in the game to give Kanab the lead 38-37. The ‘Girls played a great game … until the fourth quarter, when a furious Gunnison comeback gave them a two point lead 37-35, with less than a minute to play. Kanab led 11-6 and 20-10 at the break, dominating the Lady Bulldogs in the first half.

The Cowgirls stretched their lead to 31-18 heading into the final period of play, with the game seemingly at hand. Kanab’s free throw shooting, sinking only eight of 24 for 33 percent, almost cost them the game. Kanab only managed seven points in the fourth quarter, with Houston’s trey the biggest shot of the night. Gunnison poured in 19 points in the final stanza to take the two point lead, only to see their rally fall one point short.

Katlyn Glover and Shaylee McDonald led the Cowgirl offense with 12 points apiece, while Whitney Houston tallied seven. Hannah Reidhead put in four and Jessika Houston three.

The big win put the Cowgirls into the semifinal game against the state’s top-ranked team Richfield on Friday. The Lady Wildcats beat Enterprise by 10 in Thursday’s game. Kanab hung in there … once again for three quarters, only trailing by five heading into the final frame, 40-35. But the Cowgirls could only manage two points in the fourth, while Richfield scored 10 to win by 13, 50-37.

In the game for third place, Kanab fell to Parowan 45-36, suffering a letdown from the big loss to Richfield. The Cowgirls had beaten the Lady Rams twice during the regular season, but Saturday was not their day. Parowan outscored Kanab in every quarter except the first period, when both teams tallied 13. The Rams put in 14 in the second frame, holding the Cowgirls to only nine points, to take a 27-22 lead at the break. Kanab could only manage to score seven points in each of the final two quarters, only scoring 12 field goals in the entire game.
