Cowboys Win 2 out of 3
The Kanab Cowboys picked up two important region victories at home last week, only to drop a close game on the road to Virgin Valley.
Kanab started off the week with an 8-2 win over Enterprise on Tuesday. Justin Orton was Mr. Offense and Mr. Defense in this game. After singling in the first inning, Orton led off the third with a solo shot high and deep over the right field fence. He added a triple leading off the fourth, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Bryce Hafen later in the inning.
Orton’s homer triggered a five run outburst by the Cowboys in the third. They added one in the fourth and two more in the fifth to lead 8-0 heading into the final inning.
Orton also threw seven innings, not allowing a run over the first six, to get the “W.” He struck out 11 Enterprise batters, including seven in the first three innings.
Taylor Guernsey rapped out a triple and two singles to help the cause. Kolton Perkins had a double and a single, and Dason Ott added two singles.
In the big third inning, Ott singled after Orton’s homer. Craig Brinkerhoff knocked in Ott, and later scored on a triple by Guernsey. Brendan Judd and Perkins rapped out back to back doubles for the final two runs of the rally.
On Thursday, the Cowboys traveled to Mesquite for a non-region game against Virgin Valley. Kanab ended up on the short end of the score 11-8. They had a chance to pull it out in the final inning, but the rally ended with the bases loaded.
On Friday, the Cowboys hosted Beaver, who were in third place in Region 13 behind Kanab and Parowan. The home team went up early10-3, thanks to a grand slam by Brinkerhoff. Beaver came back and took the lead 13-12 in the top of the seventh on a three run homer.
Dustin Reidhead led off the bottom of the seventh with a single. After one out, Trevor Yoho bunted him to second. Beaver intentionally walked leadoff hitter Orton to put runners on first and second with two out. Guernsey made them pay by ripping a double down the left field line to score both runners to win the game, 14-13.
Kanab hosts Millard on Tuesday for their final region game.
