Cowgirls sweep Escalante
The Cowgirl volleyball team had a good outing against the Escalante Moquis. The game plan of the Moquis was clear during the first few minutes of the first set; use their two best players and pound the net. However, the Cowgirls sent a very strong message, “Not in our house!”
The first set was led by Kate Hoffmeister and Calli Jackson at the net, blocking everything the Moquis could send. The first set went to the Cowgirls.
The Moquis changed their game play in an attempt to avoid being blocked by moving their hitters deep and outside. But the Cowgirls countered by digging most everything that cleared the net. Jannika Ott led the way with 12 digs. Kanab would take the second set rather easily.
Faced with a win or go home, the Moquis prepared for the third match. In true Cowgirl style, Kanab answered them with awesome hitting of their own. Senior Josie Orton led the team with 19 kills, followed by Calli Jackson with nine. Also getting in on the action was Kate Hoffmeister with seven, Kaytee Glover with seven, and Marina Tueller with one.
All the hitting was made possible by some nice digs from the back row, followed by 24 set assists by Megan Buck.
The Cowgirls took a 12-point lead, only to let down for a moment, allowing the Moquis back in the game. But in the end, the Cowgirls were just too strong up front and took three straight sets to win the match.
The Cowgirls travel to Bryce Valley for a non-region match today, then host Enterprise on September 22.
