Twenty-six dancers from Kanab’s Red Rock Dance Academy (RRDA) performed in the 2011 Stadium of Fire Independence Day Celebration held at LaVell Edwards Stadium on the BYU campus. This professional show featured performances by David Archuleta and country music superstar Brad Paisley. The concert had over 50,000 people in attendance and was also broadcast live to over one million military men and women and their families in more than 100 countries.

The Stadium of Fire Dancers consisted of 720 performers selected by the show’s choreographer from various cities and towns in Utah and Idaho. The dancers kicked off the show with a production of “Rockin’ In the USA.” They later helped start the fireworks extravaganza with an illuminated performance to Katy Perry’s “Firework.” In addition to the two performances, the dancers were part of the pictograms which added to the visual spectacular.

A selected number of dancers were chosen by RRDA directors Kallie Mousaw and Shellie Stewart to participate. The dancers rehearsed five hours a week through the month of June to perfect the routines. The entire group, along with many parent volunteers, traveled to Provo three days prior to the show for a series of long, grueling rehearsals in the hot sun.

Kanab was well represented and the group was extremely well prepared and professional. The day of the show, many of the Red Rock Dance Academy dancers were moved to the front row because of the level of their skill and work ethic. This was an amazing, unforgettable experience for all the dancers and volunteers who participated. Way to go dancers!

Kallie and Shellie are grateful for the support of the community, and the parents of the Red Rock Dance Academy performers. Participating in such a great event would not have been possible without all of the people behind the scenes.
