The Cowgirls softball team lost the coin toss to Beaver, which put them in the state tournament as the fifth seed. This would mean beginning the tournament against the powerhouse team of San Juan.

The Cowgirls entered the game with San Juan and played them well for three innings. At the end of the third, Kanab was only down four runs. San Juan ended the fourth inning showing why they would eventually win the state title by exploding for seven runs. The Cowgirls would lose this one by the 10 run mercy rule.

The Cowgirls then took on Duchesne, with the loser going home. The Cowgirls started slow, leaving 13 runners on base through five innings. At the end of  five the Cowgirls were up by only one run. Duchesne scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to go ahead by one. Whitney Johnson hit a single to put the tying run on board. Hannah Reidhead slammed a triple to score Johnson to tie the game. Marina Tueller would bring in the go-ahead run.  Kanab would score one more run in the top of the seventh to make the final – Kanab 9, Duchesne 7.

Now it was up to pitcher Taylor Clark to close out the game. Taylor struck out two batters and got the last one to ground out.

The Cowgirls now would face Enterprise, who ended the regular season ranked number one. The Cowgirls started fast. At the end of two innings, the Cowgirls were pulling a shocker, up 4-0. The Cowgirls made a few errors against a really good hitting team and began to see their lead shrink. In the middle of the fourth inning, the Cowgirls still clung to a one run lead. With two outs and a chance to get out of the inning, the error bug bit...and bit hard. Five errors later, the Wolves led 9-4. The Cowgirls played hard the rest of the game, but could not overcome the errors.

The young team had a very good year and have high expectations for next year. Thank you Cowgirls for representing Kanab the way you did all year long.
