The Kanab Cowgirls finished in third place this past weekend at the 2-A State Basketball Tournment in Richfield. True to form, the top three teams finished 1-2-3, with Enterprise defeating Beaver for the crown, while Kanab toppled South Summit for the third place trophy.

Kanab edged Millard 42-38 in the tourney opener on Thursday. With the score tied at 36-36, senior Sam Houston delivered a key three-point play with 1:36 left to lift the Cowgirls to victory. After being tied at the half, 19-19, Kanab built up a six point lead going into the final period, 32-26.

Calli Jackson also came up big with a double-double, scoring 12 points and nabbing 11 boards. Sisters Sam and Whitney Houston netted 11 points apiece, with Katyee Glover scoring six and Josie Orton two.

With the big “W,” the Cowgirls faced Beaver on Friday. This was the rubber match, as the two teams split during region action. Beaver won at their place in double overtime earlier in the season, while the Cowgirls beat the Beavers by 10 late in the season at home.

It wasn’t Kanab’s day, as their shots just wouldn’t fall, while the Beavers seemed to make everything. They led 13-7 after one quarter and pushed their lead to 25-12 at the break. The Cowgirls just couldn’t get a run going and fell 39-24.

Calli Jackson once again led in scoring with eight points. Sam Houston tallied six, and Whitney Houston added five. Josie Orton made three points and Kaytee Glover two.

In the battle for third place, Kanab led 18-11 at the break and expanded their lead to 28-15 in the third. The Cowgirls held on for a 45-37 victory.

Kaytee Glover led three Cowgirls in double figures with 13 points. Whitney Houston netted 11 and Calli Jackson 10. Sam Houston added six, Marina Tueller three and Jannikah Ott two.Congratulations Cowgirls!
