The Kanab Cowgirls won their state play-in game over Layton Christian last Friday morning at Snow College. The local gals held their opponents to only eight points in the first half on their way to a convincing 45-23 victory. After scoring 17 points in the first half, Kanab put up 13 in the third period to take a commanding 30-15 lead into the final quarter.

Kaytee Glover led a balanced Cowgirl scoring attack with 17 points. Jannikah Ott netted eight points, while Whitney Houston canned two three-pointers. Sam Houston added five, with Calli Jackson and Josie Orton contributing three points apiece. Marina Tueller had two points and Ashleigh Cserepes added one to round out the scoring.

With the win, the Cowgirls will face Millard on Thursday afternoon at 4:10 p.m. at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield in the 2-A State Tournament opener. If Kanab can beat the Eagles, the winner of Beaver and South Sevier awaits them on Friday at 12:50 p.m.

The Cowgirls are in the right bracket, having beaten Millard twice, South Sevier once, while splitting two games with Beaver. Going into the tournament, Enterprise is ranked #1 in the state, Kanab #2 and Beaver #3, showing that Region 13 is the toughest region in the state.

Good luck Cowgirls – let’s win state!
