Star of Wonder Christmas Concert this Sunday
The Canyon Singers will present our annual Christmas Concert, Star of Wonder, on Sunday, December 19, at 7 p.m. at Kanab High School, under the direction of Mary McDonald, accompanied by Ina Mae Tait and an instrumental ensemble from the Symphony of the Canyons.
It gets more exciting every year as we add new members and perform an even wider variety of traditional and contemporary Christmas music!
One of the highlights of this year’s program will be the premiere of local composer, Marvin Rider’s Christmas song, “Who is this Jesus?” arranged by Mariah Wheeler. Rider and Wheeler both live in Kanab.
Also featured in this year’s concert will be the quartet “Borderline.” This is the wonderful foursome that sang so beautifully in last summer’s musical, “The Music Man.” It includes David Dixon, Larry Sorensen, J.D. Maxwell and Jonathan Bowman. If you have not heard them, you are in for a treat!
We have a bit of an international flavor this year as well. The Pico brothers, Jose and Cristobal, have been helping us with our Spanish for the carol, De Tierra Lajana Venimos. Loretta Clayson will be performing a beautiful lullaby in Gaelic, and Tammy Yamada yet another lovely carol in Japanese!
By special permission from the powers that be at publisher G. Schirmer in New York City, four of our members – Barbara Sanderson, Larry Sorensen, David Dixon and Virgil Barstad – will sing the superb quartet, “Have You Seen a Child?” from Amahl and the Night Visitors.
As our music wraps itself around you in the mystery and wonder of this season until you are maybe even on the brink of tears, we will make you laugh with a version of “The Twelve Days of Christmas” you will never forget! Please join us as we once again follow the star to a place of great joy, peace and promise.
