Cowboys nip North Sevier 22-20
The Kanab Cowboys overcame losing two of their best players last Friday night in Salina, as they edged the North Sevier Wolves 22-20. It was bittersweet revenge for Kanab, as the Wolves kept the Cowboys from winning their third 1-A state title in four years last November.
Senior running back and stud receiver Justin Orton injured his knee early in the second half and never returned. He is getting an MRI on Tuesday to see the severity of the injury.
Linebacker and guard Dason Ott was thrown out of the game for defending his quarterback Craig Brinkerhoff, who was getting mugged at the bottom of a pile.
After Orton ran one in for a score in the first quarter from 41 yards out, the extra point attempt was blocked.
North Sevier scored their first touchdown of the game later in the first period when Zach Wilcox returned a blocked Cowboy punt 24 yards to the end zone.
Brinkerhoff hooked up with Kade Quarnberg for a 41 yard touchdown pass play for the only score of the second frame. Orton ran in the two-point conversion and Kanab led 14-7 at halftime.
North Sevier scored the only touchdown in the third quarter when QB DawltonVeater hooked up with Derrick Christensen on a 24 yard pass. The extra point kick was no good and Kanab led 14-13 going into the fourth period.
A 10 yard touchdown pass from Brinkerhoff to Quarnberg pushed their lead to 20-13. A two point pass conversion from Brinkerhoff to tight end Rhees Jackson was the difference in the victory, as Wilcox scored from six yards out later in the fourth to make the final 22-20.
The Cowboys have a big game this week when they host Beaver, who suffered their first loss of the season last Friday to American Leadership Academy 21-14. Beaver lost five fumbles in the contest.
In other 2-A action, South Summit, South Sevier and Millard remained undefeated, while San Juan suffered their first loss of the year to Durango, Colorado, 21-20. South Summit defeated 3-A Delta 27-7, while South Sevier won a big Sevier County battle over Richfield, 28-7. Millard toppled Grand 21-14 in another battle of unbeatens. Parowan picked up their first win of the season, beating up on Gunnison 28-8.
