An August 2 motorcycles/truck accident on SR 89 east of Kanab left two females dead. The 11:15 a.m. accident occurred at Mile Post 60, when a group of eight motorcyclists were traveling eastbound en route from Los Angeles, Calif. to the 78th annual Sturgis, South Dakota Motorcycle Rally.

According to the Utah Highway Patrol, one of the riders remembered that he had forgotten a bag at the local McDonald''s restaurant where they had eaten lunch. He caught up with the front riders and let them know he was turning back. He told them he''d catch up with them after he retrieved his bag.

The one rider stopped to wait for traffic to pass until turning around, when three other riders stopped with him, some in the travel lane. The driver of a white GMC truck didn''t see that the riders were stopped. He applied his brakes, but was unable to avoid a collision. The GMC truck hit at least two of the motorcycles, which in turn, hit two more of the bikes.

Ingreborg Treitinger, 62, of Los Angeles, Calif., died at the scene. Brigit Stein, 50, of Germany, died at the Kane County Hospital. A third rider was transported from the Kane County Hospital by air to Dixie Regional Medical Center in critical, but stable, condition.
