The Kanab Cowboy baseball team made a run at the 2A State Tournament last weekend, finishing in third place. Kanab entered the weekend in the winner’s bracket, but fell to Grand 6-2 last Thursday, May 11. Gunnison won the other winner’s bracket game with a 7-5 win over Grand.

With the loss, Kanab played Emery on Friday, May 12, and after jumping out to an early 7-1 lead, held on for a 10-5 victory.

Next up was Central region winner South Sevier, who defeated Kanab 5-0 in the last regular season game. The Cowboys got revenge on the Rams, winning in eight innings, 10-9. Kanab needed four runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 8-8, to send it into extra innings.

This put them one game away from the championship game, but they had to get by once-beaten Grand to face Gunnison, who had yet to lose. The Cowboys battled the Red Revils, and only trailed by two, 5-3, after five innings. Kanab added one run in each of the final two innings, but it wasn’t enough. Grand scored two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to win 9-5.

Gunnison defeated Grand for the second time, 9-4, to win the 2A state title. The Bulldogs went undefeated in the tournament.

Great job Cowboys!
