Cowboys sending 11 wrestlers to State
Kanab wrestlers have been tough on the mat as they head into the last of their season, leading up to the 2A State Tournament to be held this Friday and Saturday at Utah Valley University.
The Cowboys traveled to Enterprise on January 24 to compete in a two-day tournament, competing against 18 schools. They placed fourth overall as a team.
Kanab sent four individual wrestlers to the podium. Cody Stubbs, at 106 pounds, put forth a gutsy performance to win a 5-4 decision over Altamont for gold. Alan Raddatz, at 195 pounds, made a charge into the finals, but came up short in a hard fought decision to finish second. Jaxson Giddings, at 220 pounds, placed fourth. Alex Allen, at 182 pounds, and John Sims, at 160 pounds, also claimed fourth place medals.
Kanab wrestlers were back in action at home on Tuesday, Jan. 31 against Cedar and pleased the crowd by winning nine out of 11 matches, all wins ending in pins.
Back on the road this past weekend, the wrestling team headed to Richfield to compete in the Division B state-qualifying tournament at the Sevier Valley Center. Division B competition included North Sevier, North Summit, Beaver, Grand, Enterprise, Emery and San Juan. Kanab qualified 11 out of the 12 wrestlers to compete at the state tournament this weekend, and had eight boys bring home medals. Jaxson Giddings, Patrick Lou and Alvaro Yarnoz hung in there for sixth place medals. Dylan Bistline was able to secure fifth. Alan Raddatz, John Sims and Dustin Bistline all fought through tough competition to place fourth. Cody Stubbs surged into the finals to win a thrilling overtime victory over Smith from North Sevier, and was also awarded the Outstanding Wrestler of Division B.
Coaches Blaine Wheeler and Brandon Stubbs are pleased with the effort the boys have put forth this season and want to wish them luck this weekend as they take on the best in the state. Go Cowboys!
