Killer Whales return for the Summer
The Killer Whales Swim Team is back in action at the Fredonia Pool. These swimmers gather from Jacob Lake, Pipe Spring, Kanab and Fredonia to swim together all summer long. Seventy swimmers, ages six through 18, compete on teams according to their age group. Practicing every day starting at 7 a.m. the swimmers are perfecting their freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly skills. Plus they are trying to achieve the Killer Whales’ goals: work hard, make a new friend and have fun!
Last Saturday was the swim team’s first competition. They were up against the St. George summer recreation teams in a meet held at Dixie State University. It was an opportunity to test their skills. Competition was tough as 60 Killer Whales raced in individual and relay events against a strong Dixie team. However, our local team placed well in each event, reported Coach Regina Finicum. Coaches Eva Raddatz and Annie Nording commented that the kids performed very well and learned so much from their first meet. Swimmers Cooper Holts and Dominic McConnell were heard to say, “We made a new friend” and “Yes, it was fun!”
Many thanks to the coaches, parents and family members who support the team in so many ways. And special thanks to Alan Black for his great photos.
The next swim meet will be on Saturday, June 25 at the Fredonia Pool beginning at 8 a.m. (AZ time). Come get hamburgers, drinks and treats, and enjoy the competition. You’ll know the swim team is there when you hear their whale song reverberate around the pool, “Whales, Whales, Whales, Whales...Oh, how we love our Killer Wha-a-ales! Who-o-o!”
