The Kanab Junior High basketball team took first place in the Southern Utah Red Rock League, finishing 12-1. The league met at Bryce Valley High School last Saturday for the year-end tournament.

Kanab opened the tournament by defeating Panguitch 50-28. Their next opponent was the Valley Buffalos. Kanab pulled away, winning 40-28. The championship game showcased the talented Parowan Rams. Kanab’s defense was tough, holding the Rams to eight points in the first half. Leading 16-8 to start the second half, Kanab continued to play well. Parowan battled back to tie the score at 28 with only five minutes left in the game.

The Cowboy defense stiffened again, holding the Rams to one point the rest of the game, pulling away to win 37-29 to win the Red Rock championship.

Nathaniel Houston was Kanab’s leading scorer with 16 points, and Sam Orton finished with 12. The Cowboys Kyle Blomquist scored five points, while Cade Szymanski and Carter Franklin had two apiece.
