Cowgirls win Classic
The Kanab Cowgirls won the Cowgirl Classic last weekend, pounding Gunnison on Friday night 48-27, and holding on Saturday night to nip San Juan 39-35.
In Friday evening’s victory, Kanab led the whole way, up by five, 12-7 after one quarter of play. They stretched their lead to 24-15 at the half. Gunnison played the Cowgirls close in the third frame, only getting outscored by two points, 9-7, but Kanab still led 33-22 with one period to go. In the fourth stanza, the ‘Girls put the pedal to the metal, outscoring the Bulldogs 15-5, to win going away, 48-27.
Lacy Glover and Katelyn Church led Kanab in scoring with 12 and 10 points. Sidney McDonald knocked down two treys and tallied eight points, while Emily Stewart netted seven and KC Houston four.
With the win, the Cowgirls played for the 2015 Classic Championship on Saturday evening against San Juan. Kanab jumped out to a 12-6 lead after one. They kept the offense going, scoring 12 more in the second quarter, to lead 24-16 at the break. For the third consecutive period, Kanab put down 12 points, while holding the Lady Broncos to nine, for a 36-25 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. This is when things got interesting … as San Juan battled back to within four points at the buzzer. Kanab hung on to get the win 39-35.
KC Houston had the hot hand for Kanab, pumping in 13 points to pace the Cowgirls. Sidney McDonald netted eight, with Lacy Glover and Emily Stewart putting in five points apiece. Channing Jackson added four.
Prior to the Classic Tournament, Kanab lost a road game on Tuesday, December 8 to Bryce Valley, 44-40.
Bryce Valley started strong and led 14-9 after one. They stretched their lead to 27-19 by halftime. The Cowgirls weren’t going down without a fight, and battled back in the third quarter, holding the Lady Mustangs to three points, while scoring 10 themselves, to cut the gap to one point, 30-29. With one period to go, it was anyone’s ballgame. Kanab had their highest total for a quarter with 11 points, but Bryce Valley tallied 14, and beat the Cowgirls, 44-40.
Emily Stewart hit three three-pointers, and KC Houston also had nine points, to pace Kanab. Channing Jackson played a good game and netted eight. Lacy Glover scored five and Katelyn Church four.
This year, the Cowgirls are coached by Kade Glazier, who is assisted by Kevin Glazier.
This week, the Cowgirls travel to Milford on Tuesday to face the Tigers. On Friday and Saturday, they will be playing at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield at the 2A/3A Preview. Friday morning they play North Sanpete at 11:30 a.m. and Saturday at 3 p.m., they take on Canyon View. Good luck Cowgirls!
