Canyon Singers introduces new director
V. Lee Barnett will be serving as the new director of the Canyon Singers. With the loss of long-time director, Mary McDonald, Barnett has accepted the challenge of directing Kanab’s community choir.
Lee grew up in Payson, Utah, and started performing as a vocal soloist at age eight, as well as playing the accordion, piano and trumpet. He was drum major for the Payson High School band and was student choral and band conductor. After attending one year of school at SUU in Cedar City, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served as a medic from 1970 to 1972.
Following his time in the Army, he served as a full time missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Argentina. After his mission, he attended BYU as a Composite Music Major in vocal pedagogy and music composition. It was then that he met the love of his life Terri, who also has a love of music, and they were married in December of 1975. He sang with the BYU Acappella Choir, toured Europe and performed in the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris, France, in Geneva, Switzerland, England and before the King and Queen of Spain.
For the past 30 years, Lee has been the conductor of many church and civic choirs in Payson. Lee enjoys composing, arranging and conducting music for both choral and orchestra.
Lee and his wife Terri moved to Kanab when they bought Paxman Heating & Cooling in April of 2014, which is now Barnett Heating & Cooling. Lee works along with his wife Terri and son Dan. They love the small town atmosphere, the beautiful scenery, the kind and caring people.
Lee and Terri were invited to sing with the Canyon Singers for the 2014 Christmas Concert. They truly felt accepted and part of the community from the very first practice. It was a joy to sing under the direction of Mary and get to know a few of the choir members. Mary is missed and it is Lee’s sincere desire to continue the tradition of quality concerts performed by the Canyon Singers.
There will be an organizational meeting for all choir members – past, present and future – on Sunday, June 28, at 7:30 p.m. at the LDS South Chapel on South Highway 89. All interested in participating with the Canyon Singers are urged to attend. There are many opportunities to provide help and support for the choir, so we need you. Yes you, everyone can help.
