Kane County Children's Justice Center Grand Opening June 17
Are you One With Courage? Child sexual abuse is a crime of silence that thrives because not only the perpetrator, but often the victim, and even victim’s loved ones, do not want to share their dark secrets. It’s time for all of us to be One With Courage and take a stand against child abuse!
With that goal in mind, the Kane County Attorney’s office has partnered with the Iron County Children’s Justice Center, the Utah Attorney General’s Office, and Kanab City to establish the first ever Kane County Children’s Justice Center. The Children’s Justice Center is a homelike facility, which serves children and families who are experiencing the crisis and chaos that comes with the disclosure of significant physical or sexual abuse of a child. The center is designed to help children feel safe and comfortable so that they may begin to deal with the difficult and often frightening issues that surround abuse.
Traditionally, investigation of child abuse requires multiple interviews of the child victim by the police, social services, medical personnel, psychologists and attorneys. Each interview occurs at a different place and rarely in a setting that is familiar or comfortable for the child. The Children’s Justice Center is a place for the child with a homelike environment, where one necessary interview can occur in an atmosphere that is non-threatening to the child.
The goal is to produce a comprehensive response in exploring allegations, to provide recommendations to parents regarding the safety or treatment needs of the child, and to stabilize the crisis often experienced by the family. You can learn more about the Children’s Justice Center and find out how you can be a part of a community that helps prevent child sexual abuse by visiting www.onewithcourageutah.org.
Currently a portion of the Kanab City Ranchos Fire Station is being renovated to become the first home for the Center.
TC Engineering has volunteered to manage the project, which has moved forward with lightning speed, while using almost 100% donated labor and material, thanks mostly to Lori Hunt.
Please join the entire community for a Grand Opening Celebration for the Kane County Children’s Justice Center at one of two events. First, please attend an open house and ribbon cutting ceremony, sponsored by the Kanab Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, June 17 at noon. Second, register for the first annual Children’s Justice Center Father’s Day Fun Run on Saturday, June 20. The race will include a 10K beginning at 8 a.m. and a 5K beginning at 8:30 a.m., both with categories for individual runners, families and runners with pets. We will also have an open house the same day until noon.
We invite you to come see the new Center and learn more about it. You can also find more information and register for the race by going to the CJC website at www.kane.utah.gov/cjc or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/kanecountycjc.
