Mother's Day Weekend in Kanab - Running Moms, Greyhound Dogs & Amazing Earthfest
There will be something fun for everyone on Mother’s Day weekend in Kanab. Three annual events overlap this year: The Kanab 10K, the Greyhound Gathering and the Amazing Earthfest celebration begins.
The participants of the Kanab 10K will check-in on Friday evening in Kanab and enjoy a pre-race dinner and live entertainment at the Kanab City office (76 N. Main) from 5-8 p.m. The race will begin at 7 a.m on Saturday at Moqui (Mo-key) Cave north of Kanab on HWY 89 and meander alongside Kanab Creek and the Vermilion Cliffs and finish at the Kanab City Park nestled up against the red rock back-drop on the north end of town. In honor of Mother’s Day, Kanab City Mayor, Robert Houston, will present each mother with a rose as they cross the finish line.
There will be a post-race breakfast , awards (three-deep in each category), drawings/prizes including a guaranteed entry into the coveted St. George Marathon. There will also be a new arts & crafts fair at the park this year to do some last-minute Mother’s Day shopping during and after the race. Shopping will be available from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m.
Registration for the race is available online prior to the race at Kanab10k.com for $30/person and the morning of the race from 6:00 a.m.- 6:30 a.m. for $35/person.
After the 10K race and awards, folks can mosey on down to Center Street and watch the one-of-a-kind greyhound dog Costume Parade. Over 200 hounds and their humans will strut in full costume from one end of Center Street to the other.
On Sunday morning folks can watch Kanab City Chief of Police, Tom Cram, use his radar gun to measure the speed on these former racing hounds. This Blur of Fur event will be 9 a.m.- 11 a.m. at the Kanab Elementary School. For more information on the greyhound activities, so to greyhoundgang.org.
If you stick around on Sunday, the annual Amazing Earthfest will begin early at 7:45 a.m. with a road ride for bicyclists, a red rock hike, followed by some classes. The Invocation to Sustainability will begin at 2 p.m. followed by a canyoneering clinic and then the viewing of two documentary films.
The Amazing Earthfest celebration will continue through the week and features 80 different activities centered on discovery, learning, arts and adventure. For more information, go to AmazingEarthfest.com.
