Live music, great food and a street fair will be among the highlights of the inaugural Balloons & Tunes Roundup, a three-day event featuring hot air balloon flights, taking place February 27 through March 1.

Balloons will launch at approximately 7 a.m. on each of those days (weather permitting) from Coral Cliffs Golf Course in Kanab, 755 E. Fairway Drive. The location will provide participants with the dramatic sites of Vermilion Cliffs, located near the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.

Events held later on Friday and Saturday include a Battle of the Bands competition, crafts, foods and games at a Street Fair on Main Street, and even a Street Zumba demonstration on Saturday, February 28.

Hot air balloons will line Center Street on Saturday, 7 p.m., for a traditional Balloon Glow exhibition. Fifteen of the 20 balloons attending the event will fill up and glow for spectators to enjoy the vibrant balloon colors in the starry night sky of the desert.

“We think we’ve put together an event that can be memorable and fun for the whole family,” said Ken Gotzen-Berg, executive director of Kane County Office of Tourism. “We’ve had a team of people working on this plan for awhile, and it’s exciting to see it come to fruition.”

All of the events associated with the inaugural “Balloons & Tunes Roundup” are free. There will be vendors selling food, refreshments, games and toys for kids, souvenirs and lanterns. There will be a Lantern Launch on Saturday evening following the Balloon Glow (weather permitting).

Balloon flights are for exhibition; rides are not available for purchase. Free rides are offered to media, event sponsors and volunteer crew.

Sponsors of the Balloons & Tunes Roundup include: Amerigas; Parry Lodge; Best Friends Animal Sanctuary; South Central Communications; Best Western Red Hills; Spurs Grill;; Glaziers Market and Stage Stop gas station; Honey’s Marketplace; Coral Cliffs Golf Course; ERA Utah Properties; Little Hollywood Museum and Cookout; Holiday Inn Express & Suites; Kaibab Storage; Canyon Book and Fotoworx; Willow Canyon Outdoor; Coral Hills Dental; Days Inn Suites; Thunderbird Lodge & Restaurant; Ramsay Automotive and Mesa Design/Architects.

The county is paying $1 bounty per lantern for the lanterns that are retrieved after the lantern launch (if weather permits). The Lantern Launch is scheduled for Saturday night from 8-9 p.m. They can take any lanterns that they collect to the Event/Volunteer Center on Monday morning and get $1/lantern

Folks can park at Wendy’s/7-11, along the street, or at the GSENM office for the launches at the golf course. The launch site is set for the golf course, but depending on weather/breeze direction, they may need to relocate and launch elsewhere. In that case, we’ll post it on the event Facebook page.

Breakfast will be for sale on Saturday morning at the golf course from 7-9 a.m.
