The Kanab High School Varsity Wrestling Team participated in the Page Sand Devil Classic Tournament in Page, Arizona on Jan. 24 and 25. This is one of the largest tournaments we participate in, with 25 teams participating from four different states including Arizona, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico.

Each weight class had a 32 man bracket. Two of our wrestlers placed in the tournament. Nate Bowman, son of Jim and Elaine Bowman, placed first in the 182 pound weight class. Cameron Barnes, son of Kevin and Sara Barnes of Church Wells, placed fourth in the 113 pound division.

Nate, a senior at Kanab High, won his championship match against his Page opponent half-way through the second round with a Technical Fall decision score of 16 to 0.

Nate was also recognized and awarded the Vincent Bryant Award.  The Vincent Bryant Award is given every year to an outstanding wrestler that meets the criteria of someone who has the best combined skill, aggressive, all-out commitment, and never gives up! Unlike other awards given, this award is voted on and decided by the tournament referees.

The Page High wrestling coach stated that he hadn’t seen a wrestler that resembled Vincent Bryant’s wrestling style and determination as much as Nate in a very long time. He said, “He was just a machine. Nate wrestled as hard in the last 30 seconds of his matches as he did in the beginning.”

The Page Team gives this award in honor of former Outstanding Page High School Alumni wrestler Vincent Bryant. In preparing to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Vincent had undergone a wisdom tooth extraction procedure. Vincent had a severe reaction to the anesthetic and ended up in a coma. He eventually came out of the coma, but was left to a life of being an invalid.

This year’s award was especially bittersweet, as Vincent passed away on January 14, 2014. He was laid to rest on the first day of the tournament, the day before this was awarded.

This weekend, the Cowboy wrestlers will travel to the Enterprise Tournament, gearing them up for Region Divisionals in Richfield the following weekend.

The State Wrestling Tournament will be held February 14 and 15 in West Valley City at the Maverick Center. Pin ‘em Cowboys!
