Upon recommendation of Mr. Lou Brown, the Director approved the cancellation of SULA 1684.
The Taxpayers Association of Kane County was one of the lead opponents of the project. President Sky Chaney was elated, “I am so happy that caring people in our community have succeeded in keeping this risky and toxic coal gas plant out of Kanab. By paying attention and taking action we can keep our community from being spoiled as we move into the future.”
Joan Thacher, spokesperson for KanabCares, another key opponent of the plant, said, “I believe that there will be a collective sigh of relief from many Kanab residents when they hear Viresco will not be renewing their lease with SITLA. I hope we have all learned something from this lengthy process ... I know I have.”
“The fact that we were able to keep this project out of Kanab, when it had been supported by the Governor, a U.S. Senator, a State Representative, and our own Mayor … is a tribute to how local citizens can hold the line and shape the future of our community,” added Chaney.
