Viresco Energy has requested to cancel the lease of SITLA land for an experimental coal gasification plant south of Kanab near the Kaneplex Arena and new Kane County Jail. The reason given is Viresco lost funding from the U.S. Department of Energy for the pilot program.

Below is the request and ruling:

SPECIAL USE LEASE NO. 1684 – (CANCELLATION)

The above-numbered special use lease issued to Viresco Energy, 1401 Research Park Dr., Ste. 400, Riverside, CA 92507, should be canceled as requested by the lessee in their e-mail dated December 6, 2013. The lessee lost the funding from the U.S. Department of Energy for the pilot program and will no longer have a use for the property. Kane County. MH Fund.

Upon recommendation of Mr. Lou Brown, the Director approved the cancellation of SULA 1684.

The Taxpayers Association of Kane County was one of the lead opponents of the project. President Sky Chaney was elated, “I am so happy that caring people in our community have succeeded in keeping this risky and toxic coal gas plant out of Kanab. By paying attention and taking action we can keep our community from being spoiled as we move into the future.”

Joan Thacher, spokesperson for KanabCares, another key opponent of the plant, said, “I believe that there will be a collective sigh of relief from many Kanab residents when they hear Viresco will not be renewing their lease with SITLA. I hope we have all learned something from this lengthy process ... I know I have.”

“The fact that we were able to keep this project out of Kanab, when it had been supported by the Governor, a U.S. Senator, a State Representative, and our own Mayor … is a tribute to how local citizens can hold the line and shape the future of our community,” added Chaney.
