Cowboys split at home, Cowgirls lose Classic
The Kanab Cowboys suffered their first loss of the year on Wednesday, December 5, dropping a tough one to Panguitch 49-48. Kanab led most of the game, until the Bobcats hit a late three-pointer to go ahead by one with 34 seconds left in the game.
Kanab led 11-7 after one, and built their lead up to nine points by the break, 26-17. Panguitch chipped away and only trailed by four, 35-31 after three. A big fourth quarter by the visitors, they put up 18 points, was enough to sqeak by Kanab by one, 49-48.
Mark Bate scored 15, while Brandon Jenson netted 13 and Chase Adams added eight, to lead the Cowboys.
On Thursday, December 6, Kanab outscored the visiting Emery Spartans in every quarter on their way to a convincing 82-67 victory. Brandon Jenson led the way with 31 points, including three treys. The Cowboys benefitted from 33 free throws.
The Kanab Cowgirls lost their Cowgirl Classic championship to Bryce Valley in overtime 44-42. Kanab defeated Gunnison on Friday 46-34 to earn their spot in the title game.
The Cowgirls led almost the entire game against Bryce, up 27-21 heading into the final period. The Lady Mustangs tied it up in regulation, and then outscored the hosts 11-9 in OT to claim the title. Makelle Pollock hit the winning shot, a three-pointer at the buzzer, to give Bryce Valley the win.
The Houston girls, Whitney and Jessika, led the Cowgirls with 16 and 14 points. Whitney Syrett led Bryce with 18.
In the first game against Gunnison, Whitney Houston scored 17, while Shaylee McDonald netted 14.
