First KTX Series race smash hit
In the early morning hours last Saturday many rabbits, coyotes, and even one rattlesnake, had their early morning slumber interrupted as 88 runners and walkers set off from the eighth fairway of Coral Cliffs Golf Course into the hills of Pugh and Tom’s Canyons.
The race was actually two races rolled into one. The field of participants was evenly split between a 5k and 10k race. The two races were designed in such a way that they both started at the entrance of Pugh Canyon and ended in the La Estancia development located in the month of Tom’s Canyon. Thus the name: KTown X-Canyons.
Runners turned in some impressive times. Colby Spencer, a senior at Valley High School, who was the Utah 1A cross country champ last year, crossed the line first at a blistering pace covering the 5K in 19:58. Russell Clarkson, a junior at Kanab High, was the first across in the 10K category with a time of 48:17. (See the complete listing of all the top finishers.)
Those in charge of the event were satisfied with the competitive level and the event, while also providing a fun time for those who were not pushing quite so hard.
This race is part of what organizers are calling the KTX Series. KTX standing for KTown Xterras. Organizers are planning to add several off-road events to the series that will all be based on the great trails surrounding Kanab.
