Escalante man charged with threatening Garfield County Attorney
41-year-old Joe Sidwell of Escalante was arrested on Monday, April 27, on charges of leaving a disturbing and threatening phone message for Garfield County Attorney Barry Huntington.
According to police, Sidwell''s wife recently contacted Escalante police officer Jared Dunton to try and place a stalking injunction against Sidwell. Although the stalking injunction was eventually denied, Sidwell allegedly left a harassing message on Officer Dunton''s cell phone Sunday night, and then called Huntington''s office and left a disturbing and threatening message.
Sidwell posted $5,000 bail Tuesday night April 28. He will face misdemeanor charges of Threats to Influence Official Action, and Electronic Communication Harassment on May 7 at the Garfield County Courthouse. The prosecuting attorney will be Mark McIff of Piute County, because Garfield County Attorney Barry Huntington will be a witness in Sidwell''s case.
Garfield County Sheriff Danny Perkins says "The Garfield County Sheriff''s Office takes threats on anyone very seriously and we will do all we can to ensure that Mr. Sidwell is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."
