Cowgirls drop first game at state - finish sixth
The Kanab Cowgirls lost their first game in the 2-A state tournament to North Sevier 40-32 to drop into the consolation bracket. In their second game, they defeated a tough South Summit team 47-41. In the consolation championship for fifth place, they fell to Richfield 51-29.
A bad third quarter spelled doom for the Cowgirls in their opener on Thursday nitght. They were tied with North Sevier 11-11, in a low scoring first half. But the Lady Wolves outscored Kanab 12-4 in the third stanza, which ended up being the difference at the end. They closed the quarter on a 9-0 run.
For the game, Kanab shot one for seven from the foul line, which didn’t help their cause any.
Shaylee McDonald led the squad in scoring with eight points. Whitney Houston netted six and Kaytee Glover five, while Jannikah Ott and Josie Orton contributed four apiece.
In the second game against South Summit, the Cowgirls jumped out to a 13-7 lead after one period of action. Both teams struggled to score in the second frame, and Kanab led 16-11 at the break. South Summit came out strong in the third stanza, outscoring the local girls 15-7, to take a 26-23 lead into the final period. But the Cowgirls were not going to go two and done. They rallied for 24 points in the final frame, scoring more than in the first three quarters combined, to get the win 47-41 in an exciting game.
Shaylee McDonald once again led the team in scoring with 10 points, including two from three-point range. Calli Jackson and Josie Orton both netted eight, while Kaytee Glover and Whitney Houston added seven apiece. Glover’s points all came in the big final quarter. Jackson pulled down 13 big boards, while Orton snagged five.
With the victory, Kanab faced Richfield, which was the #1 ranked team going into the tourney, before being upset by North Summit in their opener.
The Cowgirls hung with the Lady Wildcats for one quarter, trailing 4-3. Richfield outscored the local gals 41-12 in the second and third quarters, to lead 45-15 heading into the fourth. It was over. Kaytee Glover led Kanab with 13 points.
